Greece introduces fines for rescue operations

A new law will be put in effect by the Greek authorities regarding people that use boats for recreational reasons. In case they use their boats diregarding severe weather connditions and warnings and triggering a search and rescue operation, they will be liable for the incurred costs as well as a fine.

The Greek coast guard made the announcement after several incidents in which the coast guard, navy helicopters and vessels rushed to rescue people who had headed out to sea for fun, despite strong winds and rough seas, and after days of severe weather warnings to the public.

Costs and fines are to be determined on a case-by-case basis depending on the resources used.
